About this verse: This line is widely known in Iran as a verse from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, and that is how most people first learn it. Shahnameh scholars, however, have not found it in this form in any manuscript of the poem: the first half closely echoes a line from the story of Rostam and Sohrab, and the second half was added in the 20th century. We keep the familiar name in the title because that is how the line is known, and we share its history here so you know exactly what you are hanging.
