The tradition behind it

Persian tilework developed over centuries into two main approaches: moarraq, in which individual glazed pieces are cut and fitted into a mosaic, and haft-rang — seven-colour — in which the pattern is painted onto square tiles and fired together. The great surviving examples are in Isfahan, around Naqsh-e Jahan Square, and in the shrine architecture of Shiraz and Mashhad. What carries over into these canvases is the logic of the tradition: repeating geometry, floral eslimi scrollwork, and colour used in flat, confident fields rather than gradients.
